Young duo wins big at Women's Four-Ball Championship
BURNS, Tenn. — In a field where they were at least 10 years everyone’s junior, Bella Bugg (Franklin) and Isabella Johnson (Murfreesboro) did not flinch and became the youngest team to ever win the Tennessee Golf Association’s Women’s Four-Ball.
They did it in historic fashion with the lowest 36-hole total in championship play with a 14-under-par 128 at Tennessee Golf Trail at Montgomery Bell. They beat the next best team by ten strokes and were the only team in the Championship division to record two under-par rounds.
Bugg and Johnson were nearly perfect as a team during the competition, recording just two bogeys in their four-ball score in two days. They saved their best golf for last, entering the final round with a two-stroke lead before firing a 9-under-par 62 to distance themselves from the pack.
Bugg will start her final year of high school golf this fall after a strong summer in both TGA and Sneds Tour events. Johnson is set to begin her junior year of high school and both said they look forward to competing in October at the High School state tournament.
The mother-daughter duo of Angel and Andrea Cropper won the first flight and came away with their second overall runner-up finish in the Women’s Four-Ball Championship in three years. The Cropper’s final-round 67 was the second-best score of the day to only the winning team.
In the second flight of the Championship division, a familiar face came away with the win for those who spend a lot of time around Golf House Tennessee or at other TGA events. Executive Director Allison Brown and teammate Kim DeMoss came away with the win, finishing as a team at 5-over-par thanks to the best score in their flight on day two.
The Senior division was closely contested all week for the overall championship. It came down to the final hole as the teams of Erica Chappell (Nashville) and Terri McAngus (Mt. Juliet) and Susan Miller (Loudon) and Robin Banner (Knoxville) were tied entering the final hole with Linda Mullins (Cleveland) and Maggie Scott (Cleveland) a stroke back. Chappell’s birdie on 18 solidified her and McAngus’ victory and Scott’s birdie won their flight in a scorecard playoff.
