University of Tennessee Women's Golf wins first SEC Championship
The University of Tennessee women’s golf team etched its name into program history with a breakthrough moment years in the making, capturing its first-ever SEC Women's Golf Championship title in dramatic fashion.
On the edge of victory, the Lady Volunteers stood together watching as Kyra Van Kan put the final touches on their title run. Just two feet separated Tennessee from a milestone the program had never reached before. The pressure was undeniable, but so was the opportunity.
Head coach Diana Cantú remembered the moment vividly. “I just remember looking at her and saying, ‘If she makes this, we win, right?’”
When the putt dropped, history followed. Tennessee defeated Auburn 3–2 in the match play final to secure the title, completing a grueling week that included six rounds in five days. Teammates rushed the green, embracing in celebration as the Lady Vols captured the first SEC Championship in program history, a breakthrough a long time in the making.
The victory was defined by resilience and clutch performances across the lineup. Among the standouts was Germantown native Sophie Christopher, who delivered a commanding 6-and-5 win in her final match.
“It’s been a lot of hard work,” Christopher said. “The team has come a really long way… the way we connect and come together is really special.”
Her performance highlighted the team’s composure under pressure—something Cantú emphasized.
“Just to see Sophie do what she did… she adapted really well and reset,” Cantú said. Moments like these, precise approach shots, confident putting, and unwavering trust carried Tennessee to its historic win.
The championship represents a defining milestone for the program, marking its fourth tournament win of the season and setting a new single-season record. It has also brought national attention to the leadership behind the rise, as Cantú was named to the watch list for the WGCA National Coach of the Year, a testament to her role in guiding Tennessee to new heights.
With the SEC title secured, Tennessee now turns its focus to the postseason. The Lady Vols have been selected to compete in the NCAA Regional at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, one of six regional sites scheduled for May 11–13. Tennessee enters the field as the No. 3 seed in a competitive 12-team bracket, with the top five teams advancing to the NCAA Championship later this month in Carlsbad, California.
Despite reaching a milestone that once felt out of reach, the mindset within the program remains unchanged.
“We’re not done yet,” Christopher said. “There is no ceiling.”
With confidence, chemistry, and momentum on their side, the Lady Vols head to Waco not just as champions—but as a team poised to chase even more history.
