TENNESSEE STATE SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

conducted by the Tennessee Golf Association

HISTORY: Curtis Person Sr. and Mack Brothers Jr. were responsible for the TGA inaugurating a State Senior Amateur Championship. When Chattanooga’s Lew Oehmig won five straight championships from 1969 to 1973, the tournament was discontinued. It was revived in 1980 and Oehmig won two more for a record seven. It was 1993 before Tennessee came into compliance with USGA rules by limiting senior play by amateur men to age 55 and older. In 2008 the Super Senior was added for players over 65 playing shorter tees.

Tim Dinwiddie

Tim Dinwiddie of Afton has been winning golf tournaments since the mid-1970s, but had never won a state tournament. That all changed when he shot 72-68-74—214 (-2) at Tennessee Grasslands in Gallatin for a one-stroke victory over Tim Jackson, the winningest golfer in TGA history. Obviously the Links course at Grasslands fits Dinwiddie’s eye. His state regional wins includes four consecutive senior championships in the Tennessee Grasslands Invitational (2015-2018).
