TENNESSEE STATE MATCH PLAY
conducted by the Tennessee Golf Association

HISTORY: The first TGA State Amateur was played in 1914. Originally it was conducted at match play, but since 1969 stroke play has decided the Tennessee Amateur championship. In 1984 at Fall Creek Falls State Park, Bill Argabrite defeated Bill Barnes, 2 and 1, in an all-Kingsport 18-hole match at the first TGA State Amateur Match Play tournament. This event was conducted for four years, but discontinued when the TGA began its State Mid-Amateur for players 25 years of age and older. The event was revived in 2004 with qualifying at the tournament site. A field of 120 played two rounds of stroke play and 15 matches to determine the champion. Beginning in 2020, the field of 64 is made up of exempt players and pre-tournament qualifiers. Winners of 16 four-player pools compete for the championship. In all, a total of 111 matches are required to determine the champion.
