Shawn Mauer New Executive Director of First Tee Tennessee

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Dec. 6, 2021) – The Tennessee Golf Foundation is pleased to introduce Shawn Mauer as the new executive director of First Tee of Tennessee.

Mauer, who has served as the executive director of First Tee of Greater Knoxville since 2017, replaces Josh McDade, who was hired as the director of chapter relations by the First Tee national office earlier this year.

“We could not be more excited to have Shawn Mauer lead our statewide First Tee efforts,” said Whit Turnbow, president of the Tennessee Golf Foundation.

“He has a passion for working with kids and we look forward to seeing the growth that he will bring to First Tee programming.”

The Tennessee Golf Foundation oversees First Tee of Tennessee, which the First Tee of Greater Knoxville joined back in the summer after previously being an independent chapter.

With the addition of Greater Knoxville, all First Tee programming in the state is now under the TGF umbrella. Mauer was instrumental with that transition through his previous role.

“We certainly had a great experience with onboarding First Tee of Greater Knoxville into the First Tee of Tennessee network and Shawn played a big part in that,” Turnbow said.  “We were happy to identify someone internally that could step up and move the organization forward.”

Mauer will maintain his office at Williams Creek Golf Course in Knoxville as he takes over statewide operations.

Mauer has worked with the First Tee since 2014, beginning with his role as program director at First Tee of Greater Knoxville.  Prior to that, he worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley from 2007-2012.  He followed that by serving as the youth director at All Souls Church in Knoxville.

Mauer is a native of Knoxville, having attended Knoxville Catholic High School before graduating from Tusculum College with a B.S. in organizational management with a concentration in financial management.

He and his wife, Janetta, have one daughter, Eleanor.

“I’m excited to take on this new role as executive director,” Mauer said.  “I look forward to learning more about each region and supporting them in their already successful programs while watching our brand continue to grow statewide.”

The First Tee of Tennessee has programming at 43 locations across the state, with program directors in Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis and Tri-Cities.  The First Tee of Tennessee reached 1,550 youth through on-site programming in 2021, while employing 32 staff members and 55 volunteers.

“The First Tee of Tennessee is extremely fortunate to have Shawn Mauer as our new Executive Director,” said Scott Flynn, vice president of operations for the Tennessee Golf Foundation.  “Shawn brings great youth development experience, proven leadership skills and most importantly a true passion for helping young people.”

“Shawn embodies the First Tee’s Nine Core Values  of Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment and will work tirelessly to impart those values to the kids of Tennessee.”
