MURFREESBORO – Four beautiful days of weather and a championship-caliber golf course greeted a capacity field for the Tennessee Senior and Super Senior Four-Ball Championships at Stones River Country Club, May 11-14.
On the final day, Paul Korth and Hubie Smith claimed the Senior Division crown, while Doug Harris and Mike Nixon successfully defended their title in the Super Senior Division.
Korth and Smith defeated Thomas White and Russ Barger 4&3 in their championship match as they raced out to a 5-up lead through the first seven holes and never looked back. They lead 4-up after claiming the 10th hole and then split the next five holes to end the match.
Korth and Smith reached the finals by defeating Mike Poe and Bob Rice 3&2 in the quarterfinals and Bjorn Svedin and Scott Ramsey 5&4 in the semifinals.
For Korth, the Senior Four-Ball marks his ninth TGA title, with the other eight coming with son Wes in the annual Tennessee Parent-Child Championship on Father’s Day Weekend. It’s the first TGA win for Smith, the former Brentwood Academy boys’ basketball coach and member of the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
The Super Senior finals saw Nixon and Harris need to go all 18 holes to win 1-up over Larry McGill and Wes Gilliland. The defending champs led the entire match after winning three of the first four holes.
Still, McGill and Gilliland kept it close by taking holes 7 and 9. Nixon and Harris won 10 and 13 to regain their three-stroke advantage, but McGill and Gilliland fired back on 14 and 16 to make it interesting down the stretch.
