Cookeville's Lee Maxwell Leads Tennessee Amateur After Day One

COLLIERVILLE – Lee Maxwell finds himself in a similar position to last year following Tuesday’s opening round of the 103rd renewal of the Tennessee Amateur Championship.

The Cookeville native will be hoping for better fortunes this year at Spring Creek Ranch, though.

Maxwell’s round consisted of six birdies and two bogeys to card a 4-under, 68 to hold a one-stroke lead over Kingsport’s William Nottingham.

Maxwell and Nottingham were tied for the lead after the first day of the Tennessee Amateur in 2017 as well.  Maxwell went on to play the next three rounds at 14-over par and finished tied for 45th.

“I was leading last year after the first round and didn’t play too hot after that,” said Maxwell, who won the 2013 TGA State Four-Ball title in 2013 with Wes Korth.  “I love this golf course.  It’s one of my favorite ones in the state.  Golf course is good, played well today…looking forward to the next couple of days.”

Maxwell started his round on the back nine Tuesday and birdied three of the first six holes.

After a pair of bogeys to bring him back to 1-under for the day, he ended with three birdies in his final eight-hole stretch.

“It was a pretty smooth 68,” Maxwell added.  “I didn’t get into a whole lot of trouble.  I kept it in the fairway, missed a couple, made a couple.  Pretty good day of golf, pretty stress free.”

Nottingham, a rising junior at Clemson University, also got off to a hot start Tuesday as he made the turn with a 4-under, 32.  The 2015 and 2016 Tennessee Junior Amateur champion had a brief hiccup with a bogey and a double, but rebounded with back-to-back birdies on his 16th and 17th holes.

There is a four-way tie for fourth place at 2-under, including Tennessee Wesleyan University’s Trent Mansfield, former Lipscomb golfer Ryan Terry, 2016 Tennessee Mid-Amateur champion Philip Lee, and University of Tennessee-Martin’s Ross Redmont.

Tied for seventh at 1-under are Trevor Johnson (Brentwood), Zachary Smith (Bartlett), Brayden Garrison (Nolensville) and Russell Williamson (Memphis).

Six-time Tennessee Amateur champion Tim Jackson is tied for 11th at even par.
