Six seemed to be the magic number during the first round of the 69th Annual SunTrust Tennessee State Open on Tuesday. Five different players reached six-under-par 66, which appeared to give them a share of the lead heading into the second round. Overall there was terrific golf being played with 61 players at par or lower. However, just as the sun was setting Michael Nagy took the lead with a seven-under-par 65.

Nagy was the last person to start the SunTrust Tennessee State Open. However, it was the University of Tennessee product who had the last laugh. Once Nagy finally began his round at 3:05 he got right to work with birdies on Nos. 1 & 2. “When I got here there were already some good scores posted. I definitely had an aggressive mindset and that helped me birdie the first two holes,” Nagy said.

The Volunteer graduate turned at four-under-par 32. Three birdies and six pars later, Nagy found himself alone at the top of the leaderboard”. The course is in great shape, the fairways were pure. We had the last tee-time and the greens held up until the end. This is a great field and I knew it was going to be a packed leaderboard,” Nagy said.

It did not take long for a low score to be posted. Chas Narramore of Kingstson, Tenn., who started at 7:30 a.m., used a stellar back-nine to register his 66. The professional made the turn at one-under-par before birdieing five of his last eight holes to complete his bogey free round. Not to be outdone by his playing partner, Joshua Bevell matched the performance with a 66 of his own, in the same pairing. The pro from Nashville quickly overcame an early bogey on No. 2 to shoot three-under 33 on the front. Bevell matched that 33 coming home.

The Austin Peay Governors are well represented atop the leaderboard. Alum Chris Baker finds himself tied for first after posting a 66 in the afternoon. The Franklin, Tenn., native got to red numbers early with an eagle on No. 3. Baker turned at two-under 34 before birdieing four of his next six holes en route to a four-under-par 32 on the back-nine. Fellow Governor alum Grant Leaver turned heads on the front-nine with a five-under-par 31 thanks in large part to a birdie on No. 1 followed in short order by an eagle on No. 3. The pro from Centerville, Tenn., birdied three of his first four holes on the back-nine and looked to be making a run at the SunTrust Tennessee State Open record of 62 until a momentary setback on No. 16 came in the form of a double bogey. Leaver was able to right the ship with a pair of pars coming home.

As the first round began to near its conclusion, there was yet another 66 being crafted. The final 66 came from Wes Gosselin who is making his professional debut. The 2016 Tennessee State Amateur champion joined the pack of leaders thanks to solid, consistent play that featured six birdies and no bogeys.
