Jonathan Hodge woke up this morning not knowing his tee time or who he would be playing with. Nobody in the field did. A weather delay Tuesday forced the second round to be completed this morning. When all was said and done, Hodge ended up in the second to last pairing. “My mindset was to just stay conservative and play my game,” Hodge said. Clayton Gregory entered the final round with a two-shot lead. He had a scorecard full of pars to start the final round allowing the leaderboard to get hectic.

Hodge was one of the first players to make a substantial run at Gregory. The Web.com Tour member followed up a birdie on No. 3 with a birdie on No. 6. That got Hodge within one, until he holed out from 20 yards on No. 7 for an eagle to jump into first. The run continued as Hodge registered yet another birdie on No. 8. “Things escalated quickly when I chipped in for eagle then made a 30-footer for birdie on eight,” Hodge said.

Hodge came back to earth with a bogey on No. 9. Gregory took advantage by birdieing No. 9 to get back within one. Hodge, who finished fifth last weekend at a Web.com event, parred the first three holes on the back nine. “I had to battle to keep my thoughts under control but I played consistent coming in,” Hodge said. With challengers coming on, including his cart mate and 2014 champion Steven Fox, Hodge made birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. “I made birdie on what I thought was the hardest hole on the course,” Hodge said.

Statically speaking, he is correct. No. 14 was the most difficult hole this week. Just when it looked like the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga alum would cruise to a victory, Gregory matched Hodge’s back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14. Gregory slipped up on No. 15 while Hodge had a tap-in birdie on No. 17 to create the final margin of victory. Hodge ended up shooting a six-under-par 66 matching yesterday’s 66.  “Honestly, I had thoughts of just making the cut after round one,” Hodge said of his even par 72 in the first round. In the end, however, he earned the right to add his name to the Curtis Person, Sr. Trophy. “There are so many good names on that trophy, a lot of my friends are on there, along with some historical names. It is surreal to think my name will be on there now,” Hodge said.

Gregory ended up in a four-way tie for second with Fox, Grant Leaver, and Chad Merzbacher. The low amateur ended up being Phillip Lee of White Bluff who used a two-under-par 70 to get to five-under for the tournament. “I approach the state open as any other tournament, just playing golf against other guys,” Lee said. Lee, a member of the most recent USGA Team Matches team representing Tennessee, was one of just three players to reach red numbers all three days. “I took it one shot at a time and surrendered to the outcome while staying committed to the process,” Lee said.

The Tennessee Golf Association would like to thank Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club for hosting the 69th SunTrust Tennessee State Open as well as all our volunteers who made it possible to run this event.
