Defending champion Malia Stovall set the pace her title defense with a five-under-par 67 during the first round. All of the sudden, despite carding an even-par 72 today, Stovall finds herself five shots out of first. The deficit is a result of a fantastic round from one of her playing partners Ashley Gilliam. The Mississippi State University commit entered the second round one-shot behind Stovall. Gilliam made birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 to set the tone. An eagle on No. 8 allowed her to turn four-under-par. “I played really well. I took advantage of holes that I could make birdie on.” Gilliam said. The birdies kept coming on the back nine.

Gilliam started the inward nine with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10-11. “I hit my irons close,” Gilliam said. Another great iron shot on No. 16 led to yet another birdie. Gilliam took a step back to the field, bogeying No. 18. Gilliam credited her group for creating a fun environment. Our group was really fun; we are all friends. We were just feeding off of each other,” Gilliam said.  Stovall and Gilliam will play together again tomorrow. Joining them in the final pairing will be Kynadie Adams who is in third place at four-under-par. Sophie Linder is also under-par through 36 holes, thanks to a two-under-par 70 today. Linder is in fourth at one-under-par for the Championship.

Kynadie Adams has a commanding lead in the girls 10-14 Age Division with her four-under-par 140. Sophie Linder is in second place in the division at 143.

The final round of the 54thTennessee Girls’ Junior Championship begins at 8:00 a.m. Thursday. Live scoring will be available.
