Match Play Brackets Set At Tennessee Senior, Super Senior Four-Ball

COLLEGE GROVE – The match play brackets are set at the Tennessee Senior and Super Senior Four-Ball Championships following a second round of stroke play at The Grove on Thursday.

There was a share of medalist honors for both tournaments as the day-one leaders in both fields were unable to maintain their leads.

In the Senior Four-Ball (55-and-older), the team of Phil Powers (Germantown) and Michael Albonetti (Cordova) followed up their opening-round 70 with a 3-under, 69 to gain a share of the top spot and earn the No. 1 seed for the bracket.

Day-one leaders Buzz Fly (Memphis) and Tim Jackson (Williston) also finished stroke play at 5-under, 139 after going 65-74.

Powers and Albonetti will take on No. 8 Tim Dinwiddie (Afton) and Jeff Golliher (Knoxville) in the quarterfinals Friday morning, while Fly and Jackson will face seventh-seeded Jerry Matthew and Mark Halvorsen (Kingsport).  Both of those lower seeds ended up at even par.  Fly and Jackson won the tournament in 2016 at Rarity Bay.

The No. 3 seed will be James McCord and John McCord of Tullahoma.  They had two solid under-par rounds to finish at 4-under, 140 (69-71).  They will meet four-time tournament champions Steve Golliher (Knoxville) and Danny Green (Jackson).  Green and Golliher had the second-lowest round of the day on Thursday with a 70 and totaled 142.

Two teams finished tied at 3-under, 141 and will meet as the No. 4 and 5 seeds in match play.  They are Mike Poe (Kingsport) and Bob Rice (Pikeville), and William Hardin (Bristol) and Cary Daniels (Kingsport).

The quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Friday morning, with the winners to meet in the semifinals later in the afternoon.  The championship match is set for Saturday morning.

The quarterfinals of the Senior Four-Ball feature players with a combined 58 TGA state championship titles: Tim Jackson 20, Danny Green 18, Steve Golliher 9, Jeff Golliher 4, Bob Rice 2, Buzz Fly 2, James McCord 2, Mike Poe 1.

Steve Golliher won the Tennessee Senior Amateur at Oak Ridge Country Club last season, while Jackson claimed the Tennessee Senior Match Play crown at The Club at Fairvue Plantation.

In the Super Senior Four-Ball Championship (65-and-older), only the top four teams advanced to match play with the semifinals being held Friday and the finals Saturday.

The team of Garry Siddons (Knoxville) and Tony Green (Kingsport) used a second-round 69 to finish at 4-under, 140.  They tied with Mike Nixon (Nashville) and Larry Dupree (Germantown), who went 68-72.  Nixon and Dupree were cruising along again Thursday before carding a double bogey and a bogey on 16 and 17, respectively.

Siddons and Green will be the top seed and will take on Bob Waldschmidt (Brentwood) and Jim Webb (Brentwood) in the semifinals.  Waldschmidt and Webb finished at 2-over, 146.  Nixon and Dupree will face Gary Pierce (Franklin) and Ronnie Law (Chattanooga), who finished stroke play at even par, 144.

Nixon is a former champion of the tournament, having won it in 2014 with Mike Patton at WindRiver.  Webb is the defending champion in the Tennessee Super Senior Amateur.
