The 47th Senior Amateur and 10th Super Senior Amateur are being held on the same golf course under the same conditions but the outcomes through two days could not be more different.

Dr. Neil Spitalny is cruising to defend his 2016 Tennessee Super Senior Amateur title with rounds of 4 under par 67 and even-par 71. He currently leads the Super Senior field by 7 shots.  The race is currently on for second place with 2 players within 3 shots of 2015 Super Senior champion champion Mike Nixon who currently sits in second by himself. After firing a first round 2 over par 73, he followed it up with a second round 1 over par 72. With a win tomorrow it would be Spitalny’s third Senior/Super Senior Amateur Championship in three years after winning the Senior Amateur at Lookout Mountain Golf Club in 2015 and the Super Senior Amateur at Spring Creek Ranch in 2016.

In the Senior Amateur, the 1986 Tennessee State Amateur Champion, David Apperson  is currently holding a one shot lead over a few of the perennial favorites.  Apperson has taken advantage of the difficult conditions by firing rounds of even par 71 and 1 under 70. He leads the field with 10 birdies through 36 holes and has yet to make a dreaded double-bogey. Sitting in second place by himself is the 2012 and 2014 Tennessee Senior Amateur Champion Danny Green. After holding the round 1 lead, Green got off to a slow start in round 2, bogeying both of the par 5s on the front 9 en route to 1 over par 72. If Green is able to catch Apperson tomorrow this would be his 18th Tennessee Golf Association State Championship along with his US Mid-Amateur Championship. Just a few shots behind Green are two other players that are able to make some noise on the final day. Tim Jackson has fired back to back 1 over par rounds of 72 to be just three shots off the lead. Jackson is after his 20th Tennessee Golf Association Championship after winning his 19th just a few months ago at the Senior Match Play. Joining Green and Apperson is Jeff Walker, who was able to fire the lowest score of either division on the day with a -2 69. A win tomorrow would be Walker’s first individual Tennessee Golf Association title.

The Tennessee Golf Association would like to thank Chattanooga Golf and Country Club for hosting this wonderful championship. It would not be possible without the staff working countless hours to make sure everything is top notch.

About the Tennessee Golf Association

In 1914, the Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) was organized at Memphis Country Club as an association of five private clubs. The objective of the Association, as stated in its Constitution, "shall be to promote the game of golf in Tennessee." From these small origins the TGA has become an association which now includes over 200 member clubs, courses, and organizations, comprised of over 32,000 individuals from across the state.
