CLEVELAND, TENN (June 29th, 2017) Coleman Jones and Alex Cobb created some separation between themselves and the rest of the field after 36 holes of the  54th Junior Amateur Championship. The two were tied at six-under-par, but not for very long. Cobb took a page out of Jones’ playbook, birding No. 1. For the first time all week, Jones failed to birdie No. 1. “I didn’t start with a birdie,” Coleman said. Cobb’s lead did not last long. The rising high school made bogey on Nos. 2 and 4 before a costly double bogey on No. 5. Meanwhile, Jones made his first birdie on the day on No. 5. The three-shot swing allowed Jones to build a lead. Jones closed with four pars on the front to take a three-shot lead into the final nine. “I had a good up-and-down on No. 7. I was underneath a tree but saved par to keep it going,” Coleman said.

Three shots must not have been enough for the Belmont verbal commit. Jones eagled No. 10 to extend the lead to five shots. “The eagle on No. 10 was a good way to break away from the field, I feel like that is what helped clinch it,” Jones said. With a comfortable cushion between himself and a field full of his accomplished peers, Jones did what he had to do. Six consecutive pars gave the rising high school senior a seven-stroke advantage. Jones ended up shooting a one-under-par 70 in his final round to win the 54thTennessee Junior Championship by five strokes with a six-under-par 207. “I defeintly am excited with how my game feels right now. This summer has been really good to me,” Jones said. Kyle Cottam, the only other player to break par, came in second place shooting 202. Jake Hall, Cooper Sears, and Spencer Cross all finished at even-par for the championship to tire for third.

About the Tennessee Golf Association

In 1914, the Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) was organized at Memphis Country Club as an association of five private clubs. The objective of the Association, as stated in its Constitution, "shall be to promote the game of golf in Tennessee." From these small origins the TGA has become an association which now includes over 200 member clubs, courses, and organizations, comprised of over 32,000 individuals from across the state.
