Gilliam’s Greatness Shines in Playoff Victory at Girls’ Junior

Ashley Gilliam gave up the lead during the final round before winning playoff in impressive fashion.

FRANKLIN, TENN (June 29th, 2017) The final round of the Tennessee Girls’ Junior Championship had signs of a blow out until one of the youngest players in the field caught fire.

Five shots. That was Ashley Gilliam’s lead heading into the final round. The rising high school junior had the same five stroke lead when her group got to No. 8. Enter Kynadie Adams. The class of 2022 product was even-par for the day and six shots behind Gilliam. Adams made an eagle on No.8. She did not stop there. Adams proceeded to birdie the next three holes.  All of the sudden Gilliam needed a birdie on No. 11 just to stay alone at the top.

Adams momentarily cooled off, and a three-putt bogey on No. 12 put Gilliam up two again, but not for long. Adams bounced right back with a birdie on No. 13 to get back within one. Both players had great opportunities for birdie on No. 14 but could not convert. An untimely weather delay threw Adams out of sync. Both Adams and Gilliam made bogey on No. 15 when play resumed. Adams proceeded to bogey No. 16 as well to fall back to seven-under-par for the championship. Defending champion Malia Stovall continued to hang tough during the final round and got within two strokes heading into the final two holes.

The final two holes were a roller coaster ride for each player in the last group. Stovall made birdie on No. 17 to tie for the lead after Gilliam made bogey. Adams made par to stay one stroke back heading into No. 18. Stovall’s drive hit the trees and the Tennessee commit could not recover. Gilliam had an eight-foot birdie putt for the win. The putt missed on the right side and Adams tapped in for birdie to force a playoff. ““I didn’t play very well today but I stayed in it. I wanted to act like the playoff was a new hole, a new round.” Gilliam said. The playoff began on No. 10. Adams appeared to be in better shape on the green, until Gilliam rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt. “I thought I had to make it to win, I wanted to give it a chance,” Gilliam admitted. Adams left her birdie putt just short, making Gilliam the 54thTennessee Girls’ Junior Champion. “My mom won 28 years ago to the day tomorrow so this is a special win,” Gilliam said. Gilliam’s mother won the Girls’ Junior twice, so Ashely still has some work to do for family bragging rights!

Although her furious comeback fell just short, Kynadie Adams won the 10-14 division. Kylan Nashmade the first hole-in-one of her career on No. 7, the 141 yard par-three.
