After 18 holes of stroke play qualifying Chase Roswall was four strokes out of the top 16. Fast forward three days and the recent high school graduate is in the semifinals. After a six-under-par 66 gave Roswall the No. 9 seed, the University of Tennessee commit won his first match 2 & 1 over Cameron Yeary. “Cameron and I were side-by-side all day,” Roswall said. The win in the Round of 16 set up a date with the medalist Chris Barron in the quarterfinals, a challenge Roswall was anxiously awaiting. “I looked forward to playing him all day. It was a tough match. We were making birdie after birdie,” Roswall said about his 4&3 win over Barron. The future Volunteer has found his stroke after a rough first day, “I have a lot of confidence. I had a two week break for graduation, but I feel good now. I just need to make a few more putts,” Rosswall said. Craig Smith is waiting for Roswall in the semifinals. Smith, the No. 13 seed and 2012 SunTrust Tennessee State Open Champion, won his Round of 16 match 5 & 4 over Tyler Peggs. Smith took his quarterfinal match the distance against Nolan Ray knocking in a 12-foot par putt to win 1up on the par-4 18th.

Trevor Johnson squared off against the defending champion, William Nottingham, in the Round of 16. Johnson looked to have the match in control, up two through 16. The defending champion proceeded to birdie Nos. 17-18 to win both holes and extend the match. Johnson managed to regroup himself and birdie the 21st hole to advance to the quarterfinals. Johnson did not need as many holes to defeat Jack Smith beating the University of Tennessee product 2&1. The final semifinalist is no stranger to making a run at the Tennessee Match Play Championship.. Matt Cooper will be making his third consecutive trip to the semifinals after beating Cayman Ratliff 5 & 4 then defeating Tim Jackson 2 & 1. “I have been in this morning match on the final day the last three years,” Cooper said after defeating Jackson. Despite two previous trips to the semifinals, Cooper is seeking his first trip to the finals.
