BURNS, Tenn. – The 2018 Tennessee Senior and Super Senior Four-Ball Championships got underway at Montgomery Bell Golf Course on Tuesday, and low scores were aplenty in the opening round of stroke play.

A quartet of 6-under, 65 rounds sat atop the leaderboard before the team of Craig McElhaney (Nashville) and John Thomas (Knoxville) came in later with an 8-under, 63 to claim the first-round lead in the Senior Division.

For the Super Seniors, Bob Clark (Cordova) and Rick Harrell (Sevierville) are tied with Frank Dial (Fairview) and Ed Link (Memphis) for the top spot after both turned in a 5-under, 66.

Action will continue Wednesday with another round of stroke play qualifying.  The Senior Division will then be cut to an eight-team match play bracket, with the quarterfinals and semifinals held Thursday and the championship match Friday.

The top four teams in the Super Senior Division will advance to match play, with the semifinals on Thursday and the championship on Friday.

Among the teams currently tied for second in the Senior Division are: Mike Gallagher and Butch Okelley, Mike Poe and Bob Rice, Dan Schorsten and Bjorn Svedin, and Kirk Bailey and Buzz Fly.

Fly teamed up with Tim Jackson to win the tournament championship in 2016.  That was the only time in the last five years that Danny Green and Steve Golliher haven’t taken home the crown as they’ve won four of the last five Senior Four-Ball titles.

Green and Golliher were tied for ninth after Tuesday’s round with a 3-under, 68.

On the Super Senior side, defending champions Neil Spitalny and John Williams are one stroke back of the lead at 4-under, followed by three teams at 3-under – Tony Green and Bob Ross, Mike Nixon and Mike Patton, and Howard Lomax and Brian Schnabel.
