CLEVELAND, TENN (June 27th, 2017) The Junior Amateur Championship is a 54 hole affair, more of a marathon than a sprint. That did not stop Alex Cobb from jumping out of the gates. The class of 2018 product started his round on No. 10 and picked up his first birdie of the day. Another birdie on No. 12 left the Brentwood native two-under through three. The birdies kept coming, “I was three under through 5 after I chipped in, I told myself if I could keep this going it would be a pretty good round,” Cobb said.

Cobb was able to keep it going. After the chip in on No. 14, the rising high school senior birdied No. 15. Three more pars allowed Cobb to turn at four-under-par 31. “I just took it one shot at a time and treated every shot the same,” Cobb explained. Cobb had his first blemish of the Championship, making bogey on No. 3. He bounced right back with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4&5. Cobb carded a five-under-par 66 to lead all players. Cobb plans on using past experience from other multi-day events to stay in contention throughout the week. “I have to keep doing what I did today, hitting good drives and giving myself opportunities. I have been in this situation at a few different tournaments and if I keep the same mindset I should be fine,” Cobb said.

There were only two other players in red figures after the first round. Coleman Jones also started on No. 10 and played his first nine holes in even par. The rising high school junior found three birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 1&2, during his closing nine to shoot a three-under-par 68. The Sneds Tournament of Champions Rankings leader sits alone in second place. Trenton Johnson, who qualified for the US Junior Amateur last week, finds himself tied for third after posting a one-under-par 70. Bogle LaRue finished his round with a pair of birdies on Nos. 17&18 to join the tie at third place with a first round 70.

The second round will begin at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday with players going off both No. 1 and No. 10.

About the Tennessee Golf Association

In 1914, the Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) was organized at Memphis Country Club as an association of five private clubs. The objective of the Association, as stated in its Constitution, "shall be to promote the game of golf in Tennessee." From these small origins the TGA has become an association which now includes over 200 member clubs, courses, and organizations, comprised of over 32,000 individuals from across the state.
