BURNS, Tenn – Neil Spitalny has three Tennessee Golf Association amateur tournament titles on his resume.
Friday morning he will be looking to add another one with playing partner and fellow Chattanooga native John Williams in the Tennessee Super Senior Four-Ball Championship being played at Montgomery Bell Golf Course.
Spitalny and Williams, the defending tournament champions and the No. 1 seed in this year’s match play bracket, defeated Mike Nixon and Mike Patton 3&2 in the semifinals on Thursday.
They will square off against No. 3 seed Frank Dial (Fairview) and Ed Link (Memphis) for the title, with the match set for 8 a.m. CDT.
Dial and Link needed 20 holes to claim their semifinal match over Bob Waldschmidt and Jim Webb.
Spitalny and Williams won last year’s Super Senior Four-Ball crown by defeating Dial and a different playing partner, Scott Felker, 2-up at Toqua Golf Club in Loudon.
Spitalny also won the 2015 Tennessee Senior Amateur and the 2016 Tennessee Super Senior Amateur, both hosted by the TGA.
Last year’s Super Senior Four-Ball was the first TGA title for Williams.
The Tennessee Senior Four-Ball Championship is also being played at Montgomery Bell this week.
Meeting in Friday’s championship match in the Senior Division will be the teams of Dan Schorsten (Hendersonville) and Bjorn Svedin (Hendersonville), and Mike Gallagher (Springfield) and Butch Okelley (Springfield).
Of those four, only Schorsten has a TGA title on his resume as he won the Tennessee Amateur Match Play back in 1986.
The Senior Division had to play both its quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Thursday, and No. 6 seed Schorsten and Svedin had to go overtime in both of theirs in order to advance.
They needed 20 holes to get past third-seeded Jerry Matthew and David Reynolds in the quarterfinals. Schorsten and Svedin then went one extra hole before beating No. 2 seed Craig McElhaney and John Thomas.
On the other side of the bracket, Gallagher and Okelley, the fifth seed, beat No. 4 Mike Poe and Bob Rice 3&2 in the morning and then came back to upset top-seeded Buzz Fly and Kirk Bailey 2&1 in the afternoon.
The championship match in the Senior Division is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
