Botwinick’s Hot Start Carries Him To Early Lead At Tennessee Match Play

CHATTANOOGA – A rain delay slightly cooled off Jordan Botwinick on Monday, but his hot start was more than enough to carry him to the top of the leaderboard at the Tennessee Match Play Championship.

Botwinick, a former Briarcrest Christian High School standout and current golfer at Union University, had six birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 30.  He finished with a 65 to hold a two-stroke lead over Bracton Womack at Council Fire Golf Club.

There will be another round of stroke play on Tuesday before the field is cut down to a 16-player match play bracket.  The rounds of 16 and eight will be played on Wednesday and the semifinals and finals on Thursday.

Botwinick birdied five of his first six holes of the day.  He added birdies on 9, 11 and 18 and a bogey on 17.

The opening round was interrupted twice for inclement weather delays for a total of two hours, 40 minutes.

Womack (McMinnville), a rising sophomore at Tennessee Tech, had five birdies and a bogey on his back nine to finish at 67.

Defending tournament champion and University of Tennessee golfer Chase Roswall (Bristol) is currently tied for third at 4-under.

Tim Jackson (Williston) – a 20-time TGA championship winner, former Tennessee Tech standout Lee Maxwell (Cookeville), and Louisiana Tech golfer Trey Poteet (Knoxville) are tied for fourth at 3-under.

Tied for seventh at 2-under are Nolan Ray (Knoxville, University of Tennessee) and Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, East Tennessee State University), both of whom qualified for the United States Amateur Championship earlier this week.  University of Tennessee-Chattanooga golfer Oliver Simonsen is also at 2-under.

There are a host of golfers tied for 10th at 1-under, including: Michael Barnard (Gallatin), Steve Golliher (Knoxville), Chase Harris (Jackson), Garrison Hogan (Brentwood), Ben Rebne (Ringgold), and Garrett Whitfield (Johnson City).
