OAK RIDGE – The 2018 Tennessee Senior and Super Senior Amateur Championships got underway at Oak Ridge Country Club on Wednesday, and red numbers were in abundance in the opening round.

In the 48th annual renewal of the Tennessee Senior Amateur, 16 players broke par on the 6,700-yard layout and all of them are within two strokes of each other.

Three players lead the way at 3-under, including brothers Jeff Golliher and Steve Golliher of Knoxville.  Volunteer High School basketball coach Mike Poe of Kingsport also turned in a 69.  All three of those gentlemen are former TGA champions.

There are seven players tied for fourth at 2-under, including: Mike Albonetti (Memphis), Bryan Kendrick (Powell), Craig McElhaney (Nashville), Scott Patton (Signal Mountain), Tom Paulsen (Gallatin), Kenny Wilson (Murfreesboro) and Eddie Wyatt (Crossville).

Six more are tied for 11th place at 1-under, including 20-time TGA champion Tim Jackson, who won the Senior Amateur title in 2016 at Spring Creek Ranch.  He is joined by Arnold Cunningham (Nashville), Tim Dinwiddie (Afton), Jerry Matthew (Kingsport), Bryan Rodgers (Knoxville) and John Thomas (Knoxville).

Defending tournament champion Danny Green (Jackson) turned in a round of even par, 72 on Wednesday.  Green also won the Senior Amateur title in 2012 and 2014.

On the Tennessee Super Senior Amateur leaderboard after day one, two-time defending Super Senior champion Neil Spitalny of Chattanooga shared the lead with Jim Webb (Brentwood).  Both fired rounds of 2-under, 70.

Spitalny also won the Senior Amateur championship in 2015 before moving to the Super Senior division, which is for players 65 years of age and older.

One stroke back are Ed Link (Memphis) and Jack Ramsey (Germantown) at 1-under, followed by Tony Green (Kingsport) and David Dooley (Knoxville) at even par.  Ramsey won the Super Senior Amateur in 2013.
